Apocalyptic fiction is a sub-genre of science fiction that is concerned with the end of civilization due to a catastrophe such as nuclear warfare, pandemic, impact event, cybernetic revolt, Technological Singularity, Dysgenics, supernatural phenomena, Ecological disaster, resource depletion or some other general disaster. Post-apocalyptic fiction is set in a world or civilization after such a disaster. The time frame may be immediately after the catastrophe, focusing on the travails or psychology of survivors, or considerably later, often including the theme that the existence of pre-catastrophe civilization has been forgotten (or mythologized). Post-apocalyptic stories often take place in an agrarian, non-technological future world, or a world where only scattered elements of technology remain. There is a considerable degree of blurring between this form of science fiction and that which deals with dystopias.
Thanks Wikipedia, but that is a little bleak. This is more of a group for people who are interested in reading or watching some of the fantastic books and movies that the Post-Apocalyptic and Dystopian genre has come up with over the years.
This blog is an offshoot from the Post Apocalyptic Book Club meetup site.
We started out in May 2009 as a group of friends who were all reading The Road and thought it would be fun to start a book club dedicated to this sci-fi sub-genre. Since, we have already read in excess of 30 books so some may say we are now experts in this field. We are also an equal opportunity group and we also read Dystopian fiction as you will often find crossover!
We hope that you can use us as a resource and somewhere to voice your opinions!
You can see our events on the calendar. They always take place in central London and involve fun. Feel free to contact me with any suggestions for books/movies and events.
The following images detail a few of our previous antics!
